Manage relation types

You can create, edit, and delete relation types.

Common prerequisites

You have a global role with the Product Rights > System administration global permission.

Create a relation type

You can create a new relation type if the out-of-the-box relation types don't meet your needs.

  1. On the main toolbar, click Products iconCogwheel icon Settings.
    The Settings page opens.
  2. Click the Operating model tab.
    Operating Model settings are shown.
  3. In the left pane, click Relation types.
    A table is shown.
  4. Click Add.
    The Create relation type dialog box appears.
  5. Enter the required information.
    FieldDescription
    Role

    Direction of the relation type going from the head asset to the tail asset.

    Head

    Asset type of assets that can be the head of the relation.

    Tail

    Asset type of assets that can be the tail of the relation.

    CoRoleDirection of the relation type going from the tail asset to the head asset.
    Description (optional)Description for the relation type.

    Note The combination of a relation type's head, tail, role, and co-role must be globally unique.

  6. Click Create.

Assign the relation type to an asset type.

Edit a relation type

You can edit a relation type by changing the role or co-role of the relation type, or its description.

  1. On the main toolbar, click Products iconCogwheel icon Settings.
    The Settings page opens.
  2. Click the Operating model tab.
    Operating Model settings are shown.
  3. In the left pane, click Relation types.
    A table is shown.
  4. In the Role or CoRole column of the relation type you want to edit, double-click the current value, edit it, and then click Check icon.

Note The combination of the relation type's head, tail, role, and co-role must be globally unique.

Delete a relation type

Note System-managed relation types can't be deleted.

You can delete a custom relation type.

  1. On the main toolbar, click Products iconCogwheel icon Settings.
    The Settings page opens.
  2. Click the Operating model tab.
    Operating Model settings are shown.
  3. In the left pane, click Relation types.
    A table is shown.
  4. In the Actions column of the relation type you want to delete, click Delete outline rounded icon.
    The Delete this relation type dialog box appears.
  5. Click Delete.
