Add an attribute

You can add attributes to an asset to describe that asset. Whether you wish to add content to an empty attribute or edit content, you can add the attribute you need directly on the page through in-page editing.

Prerequisites

  • The attribute's type is in the relevant assignment of the asset's type.
  • Ensure you have an author role to perform in page editing.
  • Ensure your attribute has been added to the asset page from the layout editor. This must be done by an admin.

Tip If the minimum cardinality of the relevant attribute type is greater than 0, or if an attribute of that type already exists, the asset page always contains an attribute field for the attribute type.

Add an attribute from an asset page

Steps

  1. Open the asset page.
  2. Click in the field for the attribute you want to add content to.

Tip You might have to click the Show empty values toggle if that attribute has no content yet.
  3. Enter the attribute content. For example, give the name asset a definition attribute.
  4. Click Save.

Edit an attribute

You can edit the value of an attribute, for example, if you want to edit the definition of an asset.

Note

Some attributes can't be edited directly from an asset page, such as the following:

  • Description from source
  • Source tags
  • Profiling results
  • Technical data type in the At a glance sidebar

If you delete an attribute value from an attribute type of the Selection or Multiple Selection kind, then you can no longer edit the values of the attributes of that type without removing those invalid values. We recommend removing invalid attribute values from the attributes before removing them from the attribute type.

Prerequisites

Note The prerequisites depend on the values that you select in the Domain and Type fields when creating the asset.

  • You have a resource role with the Asset > Update resource permission.
Tip This permission is granted through a resource role that is assigned to you either on the domain or on the community to which the domain belongs (via inheritance). For more information, go to Responsibilities.
  • You have a global role that has the relevant global permission for the type of asset for which you are editing characteristics. For example, if you want to update the characteristics of a Business Term asset, you must have a global role that has the Business Semantics Glossary global permission. Similarly, if you want to edit the characteristics of a Policy asset, you must have a global role that has the Policy Manager global permission.
Tip To view the global permissions for all out-of-the-box asset types, go to Out-of-the-box asset types.
