About asset types
Asset types are fundamental building blocks in Collibra. They function as templates to define the structure, behavior, and lifecycle of every asset in your environment.
What an asset type defines
Through one or more assignments, an asset type defines the following elements.
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Characteristic types | Attribute types, relation types, and complex relation types that can be assigned to the asset type. |
| Domain types | Domain types to which the domains of the assets can belong. |
| Lifecycle statuses |
Statuses that the assets can have. For more information, go to About Lifecycle management. |
| Articulation score rules | Rules that contribute to measuring the completeness of the assets. |
|
Data quality rules (quality score aggregations) |
Rules that contribute to the quality of the assets. |
| Validation rules | Rules that evaluate the validity of the assets. |
Navigating the "Asset types" table
The Asset types table in the Operating Model settings contains both out-of-the-box (OOTB) and custom asset types.
Checking where an asset type is used
You can check where an asset type is used by selecting the asset type row and clicking Used in. This shows the following information:
- List of asset types where the selected asset type is used in an asset type filter for the relations in an assignment.
- List of relation types where the selected asset type is used as a source or target of a relation.
- List of derived relation types where the selected asset type is used as a source or target.
- List of complex relation types where the selected asset type is used as a target of a relation.
Viewing additional columns
Some columns are hidden by default. You can use (Edit fields) to view additional columns, such as the following.
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Product | Shows which product is associated with the asset type and indicates whether the product is active in your environment. |
| Status editing |
|
| Final type |
|
| System managed | Indicates whether an asset type is managed by Collibra. |
System-managed asset types
While all system-managed asset types are OOTB, not all OOTB asset types are system-managed.
If an asset type is system-managed, you can't move or delete it or edit its public ID. You can, however, edit its name and description (for example, to translate a name into your preferred language).
If an asset type isn't system-managed, it can mean one of the following:
- The asset type is created by a user.
- The asset type is an OOTB asset type but can be edited.
